IOB is delighted to welcome John Breslin SC and Paul O’Grady BL for this event on scams and fraud to coincide with Global Money Week 2024. John and Paul will delve into the world of fraud – beginning with the Common law definition of the tort of deceit.

They will then explore how one can get caught up in a fraud and when liability accrues (including a discussion of Liability for knowing assistance and Liability for knowing receipt). The session will also touch on remedies that are available to victims of fraud, as well as a whistle-stop tour of relevant Irish case law.

There will be time allocated for questions.

John Breslin SC

John practises in the area of Banking and Financial Services law, Insolvency law, Chancery and international arbitration. With over 20 years’ experience, John has appeared not only in the High Court, but also the Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice. John has appeared as counsel for banks and other financial services firms in leading cases, including Eurofood IFSC, and has acted for the Central Bank of Ireland in the High Court, and before the Irish Financial Services Appeals Tribunal. John is chairman of the Financial Services Bar Association. John is the original author of Banking Law, the leading text in Ireland on the law and regulation of banks, now in its 4th edition. John regularly contributes articles to the Commercial Law Practitioner, the International Financial Law Review, and has been published in the Irish Jurist, the Dublin University Law Journal and the Dickinson Journal of International Law. John regularly lectures at the King’s Inns and UCD on current issues in financial services law, including the regulation of money laundering and terrorist financing, banking regulation, credit and security. John is a member of the Northern Ireland Inn of Court and the Middle Temple, and has acted as expert witness in overseas litigation, is an accredited mediator and speaks French fluently.

Paul O'Grady BL

Paul O'Grady is a Barrister who practices in the area of Banking, Financial Services, Property and Insolvency Law. Paul joined Bank of Ireland in 2001. During his Banking career he also worked for Ulster Bank, ACC Bank and Danske Bank. He worked in Head Office functions, Retail Banking, Business Banking and Debt Management. Paul holds an honours degree in Biotechnology from NUI Galway, the Institute of Banking's University Diploma in Financial Services. He is also a Qualified Financial Adviser. Paul tutors at the Law Society of Ireland on their Professional Practice Course. Paul is also a Fellow of the Institute of Banking.
