Don’t try this at home: How a DIY approach to investing may be bad for your wealth

There are so many options for investors today and it’s never been easier to access a venue to do it yourself. But the investing world is complex and knowledge levels amongst retail investors is very varied. In this session, Gary Connolly will outline the do’s and don’ts of investing and hopefully provide you with some useful take aways for starting an investment plan.

This is a programme taster lecture for the (NFQ Level 9) Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning (6 modules with 60 ECTS) and the Professional Diploma in Financial Planning (3 modules with 30 ECTS). These programmes are designed for those satisfying the Minimum Competency Code (MCC) of the Financial Regulator who wish to progress their knowledge and skills in the specific area of financial planning and provide a gateway to the prestigious Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), the world’s most widely respected financial planning designation.

There is 0.5 CPD hours available for the following designations:

  • APA- (Savings and Investments only)

  • QFA- (Savings and Investments only)

  • RS- (Savings and Investments only)

  • WMP- Wealth Management Professional

Gary is an investment Director in the investment team within Davy. He joined Davy in 2014 when Davy acquired his investment consulting business iCubed (set up in 2010), which he was appointed Managing Director of until 2018. Gary now heads up the investment advisory function within Davy and works with advisers and their clients in designing and implementing investment portfolio solutions.

Gary is a regular commentator in the media on investment topics and writes a monthly column in the Sunday Times money section. Gary holds a Masters in Economics from UCD.
